Four Seasons Hotel Beijing – Five Star Tour

This is a highlight reel of material from an eight-day shoot in Four Seasons Beijing hotel. There is a LOT more material: we shot something like 40 different hotel rooms and venues. What we shot will make up a bank of footage for them to use to generate a variety of videos focusing on different features of their hotel. I produced, directed and shot this project. I wore so many hats that it got a little silly sometimes. I edited the highlight reel using Final Cut Pro X – it was my first experience with this software and, occasional crashes aside, it’s grown on me. I really like what you can do with the color correction tools in 10-bit color space. In my tests, I considered recording 2k ProRes but discovered that the field of view is slightly reduced at this setting — the camera records a slightly WIDER image at HD resolution. This was shot as a part of an international on-line 48-hour film festival competition. The final film is called “A Part Apart,” about a pair of Siamese twins that are separated only to discover that they still feel each other’s physical sensations through a kind of sensory telepathy. Causes a bit of trouble when one of them is making out with her boyfriend and her distant but separated twin feels every sensation…I won the category for best cinematography. Roger Deakins I ain’t… We had a lot of locations to cover but the swimming pool was by far my favorite. We turned out all the lights and I put a few open-face redheads on the side of the pool. There was enough humidity in the air and enough bounce on the water to give the barest fill exposure. For any smoke, water or atmospheric elements, as long as it’s lit at least 90 degrees off of the camera axis or even more backlit, I think it looks awesome. Negative fill...

Preamble I’d watched a DVD screener of Skyfall, and this highly compressed facsimile was a mere 1/10th of the resolution of the 2k original. My wife wanted to see it in the theater, so after I’d already watched it on my computer I enjoyed it in the theater as well. But in the theater, I really started to notice things like the sets, the makeup, how craggy Daniel Craig is getting, and (uh-oh) chromatic aberration from the Master Primes the film was lensed with (citation needed). I almost enjoyed it more on my computer screen, because I was watching a story, whereas in the theater I became more conscious of the craft. Perhaps the lack of visual detail in the DVD screener forced my brain to actively fill in the gaps, engaging my subconscious in an exercise in imagination, whereas the 2k projection made everything very literal. HDx35 B4/PL Optical Adapter Test

ABOUT THIS TEST The HDx35 is an optical adapter that allows you to use B4 lenses, which were originally designed for the 2/3″ HD format, on a PL-Mount camera. The HDx35 is one of those products that looks really good on paper, and gets your creative juices flowing; “hey, I can get a 10x zoom on my ALEXA and stick it on my shoulder, and basically use it like an ENG camera. Or I get the equivalent of a 24-290 Optimo on my Alexa for a tiny fraction of the cost.” Hello, documentary shooting, here we come.
